This is not Europe!

At a time when the European Union – that unique peaceful construction in the history of mankind – is called upon to welcome refugees fleeing poverty, barbarism and war, while it is in the midst of an identity crisis itself, some one hundred small drawings will be shown to outline a dozen major designs that are shaking the old continent." (Nicolas Vadot, curator of the exhibition, 8 September 2015).

A place for exchanges and discussions, a museum of history and society, the Mons Memorial Museum will be showing 100 mostly European, but also Russian and American cartoonists. These press cartoons will invite the young and not so young to think about the rise of nationalism and extremism in Europe.

At a time when the European Union is going through many crises, the exhibition will help visitors discover the take of cartoonists on our society, through humour, irony and emotion. Whereas Kroll, Vadot, or Plantu remain the most famous in our regions, hundreds of cartoonists are working each and every day to defend freedom of expression and to stimulate discussion.

Their work is featured in the exhibition “This is not Europe. 100 topical cartoons.”  This exhibition is a co-production of the Mons Memorial Museum and Cartooning for Peace, an association created by Plantu and Kofi Annan in 2006, one of the founding principles of which consists of going beyond borders, whether geographic or internal, for each and every one of us.
