ONE NIGHT IN ONE CITY
This feature-length animated film by the director and artist Jan Balej (Fimfárum 2) consists of three short stories loosely connected by the theme of human (and not only human) weirdness and loneliness.
The Ulity (Shells) episode captures several quirky characters from an apartment block with their bizarre hobbies: a guy with a mini insect circus; the owner of a homemade animal crematorium; and a mother who treasures her donkey more than the rest of her family. The fable Větvička a Ploutvička (Twig and Little Fin) tells a story about the friendship of two loners – an apple tree and a carp – over the course of four seasons. The short story Jedné noci v jednom městě (One Night in One City) is a series of black humour, almost horror, episodes about a street accordionist and his sewn-on ear, about a spooky café and a magic genie who has to be a servant to two alcoholics... it needs to be said that this peculiar film with its rather macabre visual arrangement is not intended for children.
